Messaging

You can use the Messaging function to communicate with one or more individual students, with a group, or with all course participants. Your messsage is delivered in a pop-up window to recipients who are logged in to Moodle at the time the message is sent, and is sent as an email to recipients who are not logged in.


Send a message to an individual

  1. In the Navigation block, click on Participants.
  2. Select the individual(s) to receive your message using the check-boxes to the leftof their name(s).
  3. Scroll down to the bottom of the page, and from the drop-down list select 'Send a message'.

  1. Type your text into the Message body box and format as desired.
  2. Review the list of recipients and modify if necessary.
  3. Click Preview.
  4. Click Send message (or Update to modify).

Send a message to a group of students, or to all students

  1. In the Navigation block, click on Participants.

  3. From the Separate groups drop-down list select the 'Group name' to receive your message. If you choose 'All participants' it will go to all students and staff enrolled in the Moodle unit (including discontinued students). If you select the 'Callista' cohort it will just go to students currently enrolled in that cohort.

    Note: The Separate groups drop-down list will only be visible if you have selected Separate groups  under the Groups section in your Unit settings. See edit unit settings.

  5. Scroll down to the bottom of the page. If the list has been paginated click Show all, then scroll down again.

  7. When all students in the group are listed on the page click Select all.

  9. From the drop-down list select 'Send a message'.

  11. Type your text into the Message body box and format as desired.
  12. Review the list of recipients and modify if necessary.
  13. Click Preview.
  14. Click Send message (or Update to modify).

Review messages sent or received

  1. In the Navigation block, click on My profile> Messages.

  3. You can Search people and messages to locate old messages, or explore the Advanced options to refine the search.
  4. From the drop-down list you can display 'My Contacts', 'Recent conversations' and other options.

    Notes:
    • Users are able to edit their Profile settings to prevent non-contacts from sending messages.
    • If you receive a message from a student it is easier to retrieve their message if you add them to your Contacts.

Suggestions on how to use this tool:

  • Messaging is a means of communicating pricvately with individuals.
  • You can Message the whole class, but the News Forum may be more suitable for this purpose.
