Using the HMTL or Text Editor in Moodle

In Moodle, the HTML or Text editor is used to enable you to enter content in various tasks such as Online Assignments, Wikis and Glossaries.

Identify HMTL or Text editor menus

Expand your editing window

1a. HTML or Text editor window resize handle

Click and drag on the shaded corner to expand the size of the editing window

1b. Toggle full screen icon

Click on the toggle full screen icon (toggle full screen icon) to expand your editing window to full screen. To go back to the settings page, just click the same icon.


Format text

2a. Pre-formatted font and heading styles

You can apply preconfigured font and heading styles to paragraphs. 

Note: If a Heading style is selected, the format applies only until ENTER is pressed. Following text will be in the standard Paragraph style.

To apply these formats either:

  1. Select a paragraph and then the desired option, OR
  2. Select the option then enter text.

2b. Other basic font styles

Change the appearance of selected text within paragraphs with these options. Select the text and click the icon to apply the format.

2c. Text colour and highlighting

Change text colour or highlight selected text. To do this, select the text and click on the appropriate icons.

2d. Remove formatting

You can quickly remove any formatting that you have applied to the text by highlighting the text and clicking the remove formatting icon (remove formatting icon). The formatted text will revert to plain text.


List and indent

You can create bulleted or numbered lists similar to Word. Place your cursor where you want the lists to appear and click on the bulleted list or numbered list icon as required.

You can also indent and outdent text lines or paragraphs by putting the cursor before the line or paragraph and clicking the indent/outdent icons. When you click on the indent icon in a numbered or bulleted lists, a new sublist is started. When a list is "outdented" into an existing list, the numbering is integrated.


Copy and Paste

To paste text copied from a text document or PDF document, select the plain text icon (plain text icon), paste the text into the window, then select Insert. Formatting will be preserved.

To paste from a Word document, select the paste from Word icon (paste from Word icon), paste the text into the window, then select Insert. Formatting will be preserved.
Note: Pasting directly from Microsoft Word will cause problems or inconsistencies with the formatting.


Insert images, media, equations, special characters and tables

Insert a range of enriching resources to the content:

insert image icon Inserts an image (png or gif).

Note: When inserting an image the advanced options allow you to manage borders and how text is positioned relative to the image. Unless a high resolution is a critical requirement for your images, it is recommended that you use .gif, .jpg or .png format to reduce file size. A lower file size for images translates to a faster display for students.

Create or edit an equation with the Moodle equation editor.
Note: To use this tool you need a Java-enabled browser. Download the latest Java plug-in from

insert table icon

Insert a table after selecting the number of rows and columns needed.
Note: Some table formatting options in Moodle must be set for each cell, such as borders and content alignment.


Create Hyperlinks

  • Linking text
    To link a specific text to a web page or a web site, highlight the required text then click on the insert/edit link icon 
    (hyperlink icon) and enter the URL. To remove the link, highlight the linked text and click on the Unlink icon (unlink icon).
  • Linking images
    You can use the same icons as above to link an image to a web page or a web site. Click on the image, then click on the Insert/edit link icon (hyperlink icon) and enter the URL. To remove the link, click on the image, then click on the Unlink icon (unlink icon).
  • Prevent automatic linking
    You can prevent automatic linking of text. Highlight the text required and click the prevent automatic linking icon
    (prevent auto link icon).  


Work with HTML tags or codes

You can switch to HTML code view by clicking on the HTML icon (html tags icon). A pop up of the HTML code will be displayed and you can edit tags or codes directly in this window.


Spell check your content

You can do an automatic spell check of your content by clicking on the toggle spellchecker icon (spell check icon). To run the spellchecker, click on the icon. The misspelt words will be underlined in red. To turn it off, click the icon again and the red underline will disappear.

You can also select the language to use when running the spellchecker. Click the arrow beside the icon to select the required language.

Note: To check the spelling of newly added content, you will need to click the icon again to run the automatic spell checker. 

Reminder: Always Save your work at the bottom of the screen before exiting.

You can also use the Undo (undo icon) or Redo (redo icon) buttons as long as you have NOT YET clicked Save changes. You can use Find/Replace icons (find replace icon) to look for text and automatically replace it. 


  • The appearance of some standard HTML formatting differs in Moodle. Paragraph spaces are one example.
  • Not all W3C standard HTML tags are recognised by the Moodle HTML editor.

Suggestions on how to use this tool:

  • Highlight important text by creatively using formatting options.
  • Insert images or videos to provide interesting content or visual support for text.
